Calgary Police Officer Shot During Traffic Stop Near Edworthy Park; Suspect Found Dead in Bow River

A Calgary police officer was shot Monday morning during a traffic stop near Edworthy Park, southwest of downtown Calgary, prompting a major police response and an investigation by Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

According to police, an occupant of the vehicle opened fire at approximately 11:45 a.m., striking the officer. The officer was transported to hospital and is in stable condition.

Following the shooting, the suspect reportedly fled from the area on foot through Edworthy Park. Police said the suspect allegedly continued firing at pursuing officers and nearby civilians as the incident unfolded.

The suspect then reportedly carjacked another vehicle and drove through the park before the vehicle became stuck. The individual fled on foot for a second time.

Police deployed HAWCS, Calgary’s aerial surveillance system, to track the suspect as officers continued the search.

The suspect was subsequently found deceased in the Bow River. The Calgary Fire Department is assisting with the recovery operation.

Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or the circumstances surrounding the death.

Officers are continuing to search Edworthy Park for additional evidence connected to the shooting and the subsequent pursuit. Members of the public are being urged to stay clear of areas affected by the police investigation and follow directions from emergency personnel.
